In theory, Big Diva Energy is a very profound and en flique, weekly podcast in which we attempt to wrestle with big topics of concern, such as: What makes a diva a diva? Why have female-presenting and LGBTQ+ icons been historically so mistreated in the public eye? Why are we only just learning to resist a consistent, problematic mainstream undermining of camp pop culture?
In reality, Big Diva Energy is two dickheads who like getting their friends round to their house, feeding them too much, getting hammered on champagne and then hooting into microphones for an hour about mad things Mariah Carey has said.
Every now and then I might bang out an impression or two.
Truly, Big Diva Energy has a little something for everyone.
Tom and I are relatively unsuccessful comedians, both solo, and as a double-act (although, we did once open for Michael McIntyre, sigh…). We also do impressions and sing. Since anyone who’s anyone - particularly relatively unsuccessful comedians - has a podcast these days, we thought it was time to join the party. And, so we launched Big Diva Energy.
Every fortnight we get together with a fellow comedian or entertainer and chat about the life of a different icon (largely female or NB) who possesses what we call "Big Diva Energy" (you know, your Chers, your Celines, your Charlotte Churches). Every other week we release a "Little Diva Energy" in which just the two of us discuss the "week in diva" - ranging from a review of every Superbowl Halftime Show ever, to the time Gabrielle Union’s Uber driver did a poo in her bathroom.
Sometimes we include our friend Rich’s Bitch, because he needs the attention.
The idea is that they’re trying to explore what this word "Diva" means in the modern world and celebrate the work of that person. It's camp, it's irreverent, but we also try and tackle trickier subjects and unpick the ways in which, quite often, our subjects have been maligned in the public eye.
